Alpas Diwa, a propose shelter for abused women and girls, is located in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. It is situated near the airport, which imposes restrictions on the building’s height. Additionally, Barangay Basak faces water shortages due to the presence of illegal housing and scattered residences in the area.
The main objective is to create a temporary shelter for abused women and girls, supported by the concept of trauma-informed design. This approach aims to provide comfort and safety through the physical space for the residents. The theory applied is the cycle of abuse by Leonore E. Walker, which explores patterns of behavior in abusive relationships.
The concept of trauma-informed design takes into consideration factors such as colors, ambiance, furniture, space layout, and lighting. These elements guided the designers in creating a shelter that serves as a safe haven for women and girls. The project not only focuses on design but also aims to contribute and support the community.
The goals of this project align with the process and direction it is taking. It seeks to make healthcare facilities accessible and affordable to everyone and to combat all forms of discrimination against women and girls worldwide. Moreover, it aims to support local governments and community-driven solutions, including addressing the water shortage issue in the area. Additionally, the project aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, while also improving healthcare facilities, water, sanitation, and hygiene services to protect refugees.
